Prenatal exposure to drugs – harmful effects and challenges in investigating them
Docent Heli Malm, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, is the leading expert in teratology in Finland. She worked as a consultant in the Teratology Information Service which serves both healthcare professionals and laymen for almost 30 years. Her research focuses on maternal drug exposure and pregnancy outcomes, with special focus on psychotropic drugs utilizing large, nationwide datasets and epidemiological methods. She has published several key papers in the field and she was recently appointed as an honorary member of the Finnish Society of Clinical Pharmacology. She has contributed chapters on drug use during pregnancy and lactation for several textbooks and is actively involved in teaching.
