Laurent Guyon obtained his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and master’s degree in physics. He defended a PhD in non-linear optics focusing on natural biological fluorescent molecules. He had research experiences in Europe and North America in various domains, from non-linear optics, statistical physics, and simulation. This various experience encouraged his involvement in multidisciplinary projects. Ten years ago he joined a biological institute as an engineer both in data analysis and microscopy. Fascinated by the opportunity to answer biological questions through the availability of public experimental datasets, he turned to research in bioinformatics a few years ago. His main interest deals with gene selection and interpretation from large scale datasets with particular interests in cancer and microRNAs. He has also a clear interest in high content screening datasets and network based approaches. His past as a physicist has profoundly affected the way he analyses data, with high concerns in the way and principle the data have been acquired.
