 5\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe focus of Eija Pirinen research is to investigate molec
 ular mechanisms behind diseases characterized with genetic or acquired mit
 ochondria dysfunction such as inherited mitochondrial disorders\, obesity 
 and type 2 diabetes. The research aims at understanding the role of polyam
 ine metabolism and NAD+-dependent enzymes\, sirtuins and poly(ADP-ribose) 
 polymerases in the regulation of mitochondrial function in normal and dise
 ased states. The overall goal of Eija’s research is to develop novel tre
 atments for both inherited mitochondrial disorders and obesity.\n\n&nbsp\;
