SUMMARY:Receptor seminar: Endothelial cell progenitors\, high endothelial v
 enules and the immune response
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eugene Butcher\, Klaus Bensch Professor of Pathology\, Sta
nford University School of Medicine\, Laboratory of Immunology and Vascula
r Biology\, Palo Alto VA Medical Center\, US\n\nHost: Sirpa Jalkanen (sirp
a.jalkanen@utu.fi)\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nProf. Butcher and his collaborators have
made fundamental discoveries on cell-cell recognition\, migration and deve
lopment by using the mammalian immune system as a model. His work has been
cited about 58 000 times and his H-index is 135 (web of science). His la
b is using state-of-the-art molecular and genetic approaches\, such as CyT
OF to study the development and trafficking of white blood cells (e.g. lym
phocytes\, dendritic cells)\, including their interactions with the endoth
elial lining of blood vessels at sites of leukocyte extravasation\, their
chemotactic responses in tissues\, and their programming by environmental
factors in lymphoid tissues and within mucosal surfaces.\n\nThe Butcher la
boratory applies these findings of fundamental biological problems to tran
slational contexts\, such as therapeutic manipulation of immune cell traff
icking\, for example in models of colitis\, multiple sclerosis\, atheroscl
erosis and psoriasis. Targets and insights from the lab's research have le
d to clinical stage antibody and small molecule therapeutics for inflammat
ory bowel disease.\n\nProf. Butcher laboratory web page: http://butcherla
