SUMMARY:Fat in Focus Finland 2026
DESCRIPTION:10th-11th Decemeber\nOnsite event\nin Haartman Lecture Hall (T-
hospital\, TYKS)\n\nFat in Focus Finland 2026 (FFF2026)\nA Symposium on Bu
ilding a National Platform for Adipose Tissue Research Methods\n\nFinland
has strong adipose tissue research across brown\, white\, and bone marrow
fat\, using complementary approaches including human imaging and physiolog
 y (PET/MRI/CT)\, clinical cohorts\, spheroids/3D in vitro models\, organ-o
 n-chip platforms\, animal models\, omics/fluxomics\, and data science. How
ever\, collaboration is often constrained by a fragmented methodological l
andscape: researchers do not always fully understand what other methods ca
n resolve\, or how to integrate them into shared\, multiscale study design
s.\n\nFat in Focus Finland is a new opening that puts methodology at the c
entre: what each method measures\, its limitations\, and how to combine me
thods across scales (molecules → cells → tissues → whole body). The
aim is to catalyse Finland-wide collaborations and EU-competitive consorti
a by building a shared methodological language and generating concrete joi
nt project concepts.\n\nSo save the dates from you agenda and keep your ea
rs open for more event details!

ce.fi\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nNoursharg lab aims to unravel the cellular and molecul
ar basis of several fundamental aspects of immunity\, inflammation and vas
cular biology. Most notably the team has made internationally rated contri
butions to the mechanisms through which white blood cells (in particular n
eutrophils) breach blood vessel walls to enter inflamed tissues. Princi
pal research objectives include i) investigations into the molecular and c
ellular basis of white blood cell trafficking (in particular neutrophils)
in response to inflammatory insults ii) Exploring the interplay between va
scular\, tissue and immune cells that regulate vascular integrity and func
tion\, and iii) investigating the above fundamental concepts under physiol
ogical and pathological conditions and in response to ageing. The team
employs a multidisciplinary approach in addressing its objectives and in p
articular applies advanced microscopy techniques (e.g. confocal intravital
microscopy) to analyse white blood cell behaviours in relation to blood v

 \n\n&nbsp\;\n\nStrømgaard lab combines solid-phase peptide synthesis\, or
ganic chemical synthesis\, and peptide microarrays with protein expression
\, biochemical assays\, and biophysical techniques in order to develop mod
ulators of protein-protein interactions. Examples include development of d
imeric peptide-based inhibitors of PSD-95\, and super-binding peptides tar
geting gephyrin.\n\nThe team employs peptide microarrays\, incorporation o
f unnatural amino acids and protein semi-synthesis to address molecular de
terminants of protein-protein interactions\, for instance regulation of in
teractions by post-translational protein modification. Examples include si
te-specific introduction of cross-linking amino acids\, backbone modificat
 ions\, and post-translational modifications\, in particular site-specific
phosphorylation\, of therapeutically relevant proteins.\n\nStrømgaard gro
up employs peptide and protein engineering to study the molecular details
of protein-protein interactions (PPIs)\, and develop and design specific i
nhibitors for these interactions. They develop in vivo active peptide-base
d inhibitors of PPIs with putative therapeutic relevance. In parallel\, th
ey also study the molecular mechanisms of these PPIs\, including the engag
ement of hydrogen-bonding networks\, and regulation of PPIs by post-transl

a competition. But many applicants don't fully understand how funding sel
ection processes really work\, and so end up writing in for the wrong audi
ence. The first part of this talk will cover how funding decisions are mad
e and why that matters\, how to write at the right level of detail\, the s
ignificance of significance\, and finally\, how to talk up your ideas with
out boasting. The second part will look at interdisciplinary research - wh

\;\n\nCancer invasion and metastasis occur in a complex three-dimensional
environment\, with reciprocal feedback from the surrounding host tissue an
d stroma governing cancer cell behaviour. Understanding this behaviour in
an intact host setting allows us to examine – in a more physiological co
ntext – the aberrant regulation of critical events that lead to the diss
emination and spread of the primary tumour. Intravital (in vivo) imaging i
s providing new insights into how cells behave in their native microenviro
nment\, thereby improving our understanding of disease progression.\n\nTim
pson lab uses novel state-of-the-art intravital imaging approaches and new
fluorescent biosensor mouse models to uncouple the metastatic process int
o key stages\, in order to pinpoint critical events that drive tumour inva
sion and metastasis. Their approach allows real-time imaging\, ranging fro
m whole body tumour progression to single-cell invasion events. This helps
to understand how tumour cell dissociation\, invasion or progression are
controlled and how this regulation is linked to the development of invasiv
e or metastatic cancer.\n\nTimpson lab also explores properties of the thr
ee-dimensional tumour microenvironment that contribute to poor drug target
ing\, in order to pinpoint critical barriers that impair treatment. The te
am then employs combination therapy aimed at counteracting these barriers\
, to enhance drug penetrance and efficiency in vivo\, and improve overall
 drug delivery outcomes.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSelected publications\n\nChambers CR

DESCRIPTION:18th March at 12:00\nOnsite event\nin Biocity\, Ministeri Lectu

localization of molecules directly within their native tissue environment.
Full event details are included below.\n\nIn addition to introducing this
technology\, this seminar will help us gauge the level of interest within
our department and the broader community. While samples can currently be
shipped to another service provider within Finland\, we are exploring whet
her there might be sufficient local demand to consider bringing this instr
ument into our core facility in the future. At this stage\, we are simply
gathering feedback and would very much value your perspectives.\n\nRegistr
