SUMMARY:Data Visualization Seminar: Helena Jambor
DESCRIPTION:3rd October at 13:00\nOn-site event\nPutous Auditorium\, Joki V
isitor and Innovation Center\n\nHelena Jambor\, University of Applied Scie
nces of the Grisons\, Switzerland\nHow to not lie with charts - better dat
a visualisations for life sciences\nHost: Joanna Pylvänäinen (joanna.pyl
vanainen@abo.fi)\n\nCoffee and pulla at 12:45\, first come first served!\n
Register here so that we know how much pulla to order\n\nHelena has a PhD
in molecular biology and a lifelong passion for art and design. After comp
leting a PhD at EMBL\, she worked with multi-dimensional datasets\, images
and genome-scale data at the Max-Planck Dresden\, before becoming a scien
tist in biomedical data visualisation\, most recently at the University Ho
spital Dresden. Since 2024 Helena is an associate professor for data visua
lisation in Chur/Switzerland and trains and consults in life science data
visualisation.\n\nData visualisation is an indispensable tool in modern bi
ological research\, aiding scientists in the analysis and interpretation o
f extensive datasets and facilitating the communication of complex scienti
fic findings. Data visualisations serve three main purposes: analysis and
exploration\, presentation of research results\, and communication to the
public. Firstly\, data visualization is crucial for analyzing and explorin
g large research datasets\, such as those in genomics\, high-throughput ex
periments\, but also results from image analysis. These datasets are too v
ast for manual analysis\, and purely statistical summaries often fail to c
apture underlying patterns. Secondly\, visualizations are essential for pr
esenting research findings. Figures are widely used in scientific articles
and conference posters\, as they allow readers to effectively grasp compl
ex data. And\, data visualisation is vital for communicating scientific re
sults to the public\, as we all witnessed in the challenges of the COVID-1
9 pandemic. I will highlight examples from my research and education to il
lustrate why it serves biology well to "take a sad plot and make it better
”.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nIf you wish to meet Helena during her visit 1-3.10\, ki
ndly email Joanna Pylvänäinen (joanna.pylvanainen@abo.fi) to book a meet
ing.\n\nLecture is part of the Bioimage Analysis\, Visualisation and Beyon
d open lecture series. Please check out the other lectures too.
