shed Professor in the Department of Immunology and Pathology at Washington
University in St. Louis\, Missouri. Her  research focuses on the traffic
king of immune cells and molecular cargo between tissues\, lymphatics\, an
d distal organs\, and how these processes contribute to chronic inflammato
ry disease. Her laboratory has defined how monocytes\, dendritic cells\, m
acrophages\, and lipoproteins migrate through tissues and lymphatic vessel
 s in conditions such as atherosclerosis\, psoriasis\, Crohn’s disease\,
and liver inflammation. By combining immunology\, imaging\, lineage tracin
g\, and single-cell profiling approaches\, her lab has revealed mechanisms
that regulate immune cell migration\, lymphatic transport\, and tissue-sp
ecific macrophage specialization. More recently\, Gwendalyn Randolph’s r
esearch has focused on the role of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) traffick
ing in inflammation and tissue homeostasis. Her group demonstrated that ly
mphatic and vascular transport pathways are critical for HDL movement betw
een organs and identified a specialized form of intestine-derived HDL that
protects the liver from inflammatory injury caused by microbial products.
These findings provide new insight into the links between immunity\, meta
bolism\, and inflammatory disease\, with potential translational applicati

nity evolved in multicellular organisms as a means to limit the fitness co
sts imposed by symbiotic interactions with different classes of microbes.
Resistance is a cardinal feature of immunity\, whereby soluble and cellula
r components of the immune system sense and target pathogenic microorganis
ms for containment\, destruction\, or expulsion. In addition\, multicellul
ar organisms deploy another defense strategy\, referred to as disease tole
rance\, which does not target microbes directly. This evolutionarily conse
rved strategy relies on stress responses that rewire host energy metabolis
 m. At the Inflammation Laboratory\, researchers aim to identify and charac
terize how these stress responses engage inter-organ communication process
es that rewire energy metabolism in order to limit the fitness costs assoc
iated with infections caused by different classes of microbes. The objecti

interested in joining the lunch\, please send an email to biocityturku@bio
science.fi\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nProf. Linder’s research focuses on biosynthetic
materials. Biological materials can possess unique properties\, such as t
he toughness of silk proteins\, the adhesion of barnacle cement\, and the
versatility of the extracellular matrix. His lab uses genetic engineering
of proteins found in these materials to achieve similar properties in engi
neered systems. The engineered proteins are produced in microbes and subse
quently assembled into materials. By engineering the proteins at the molec
ular level\, the lab can influence how the assembly occurs and determine t
he final properties of the materials.\n\nIn the future\, Prof. Linder and
his lab envision that such materials could replace petrochemically produce
d materials\, thereby contributing to a more sustainable society. Biosynth
etic materials could also broaden the way materials are understood and uti
lized. For example\, microbes themselves could be used as living materials
\, programmed to grow while simultaneously forming functional structures.
These materials could take on different shapes\, adapt to their surroundin

ps://utu.zoom.us/j/61366447409\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAndreas Mayr is Head of the I
nstitute for Medical Biometry and Statistics (IMBS) at Philipps University
Marburg\, Germany. His methodological research focuses on statistical mod
elling and prediction\, with particular emphasis on distributional regress
ion and modern regression techniques. He is the author of both methodologi
cal and clinical publications\, as well as a book on distributional regres
sion. Before joining Marburg\, he held positions at the University of Bonn
(Epidemiology) and LMU Munich (Applied Stochastics). He completed his PhD
and habilitation at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Medical School and studied sta
tistics at LMU Munich and the University of Buenos Aires (UBA)\, Argentina
. He is an editor of the Statistical Modelling Journal and a member of the
Clinical Ethics Committee in Marburg.\n\nLarge-scale cohort studies are a
key resource for understanding how genetic predisposition interacts with
environmental and lifestyle factors to influence disease risk over time. A
t the same time\, incorporating high-dimensional genomic data into such st
udies remains challenging\, particularly when aiming to move beyond standa
rd polygenic risk score (PRS) approaches based on GWAS summary statistics.
In his talk\, Prof. Mayr will present boosting-based methods (Mayr et al.
2014) for deriving and extending PRS using individual-level data from lar
ge-scale cohorts. Building on the snpboost framework (Klinkhammer et al.\,
2023\, 2024)\, he illustrates how statistical boosting enables scalable e
stimation of polygenic models while accounting for the complex structure o
f genetic data.  A particular focus will be on recent work on boosting di
stributional regression for detecting gene–environment interactions (Wu
et al.\, 2026). By modeling not only the mean but also the variability of
clinical outcomes\, this approach allows the identification of genetic var
iants that may modify the effect of environmental exposures\, thereby supp
orting more targeted prevention strategies. The talk will highlight how th
ese methods can be applied in prospective cohort settings to improve risk
prediction\, better understand heterogeneity in disease development\, and
ultimately contribute to better prevention strategies.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSelec

ogies\, and innovation pathways. The workshop brings together company repr
esentatives\, industry innovators\, funding ecosystem experts\, and resear
chers working across materials chemistry\, physics\, electronics\, device
engineering\, AI\, and related application domains.\n\nThe event aims to s
trengthen the FINNESS network as a platform for academic collaboration\, i
ndustry engagement\, and future research initiatives in emerging neuromorp
hic systems.\n\n 10 June: Industry collaboration\n 11 June: Academic res
earch workshop\n\nThe event is free of charge and includes coffee with sna
cks.\n\nRead more and register for the event as soon as possible: https://

infrastructures to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming bi
omedical research and healthcare.\n\nThe organizing committee includes sev
eral members of the bioscience community in Turku\, as well as colleagues
from the ELLIS Institute and many other familiar national and internati
onal partners. We strongly encourage all colleagues who can attend to re
gister early\, as interest is already very high and the meeting will likel

jects. No strings attached\, just a conversation.\n\nFDDC is visiting Univ
ersity of Turku and Åbo Akademi University to meet researchers and resear
ch groups with drug discovery potential. Whether you have a promising drug
target\, an early or later stage idea\, or simply want to explore what dr
ug development could look like. We would love to hear from you.\n\nDuring
the roadshow\, join our morning seminar How We Support Drug Discovery\, c
 o-hosted with the university's TTO / Innovation services and book a one-on
-one with experts in the early afternoon. No pitch deck needed for one to
 one\, just bring your science.\n\nProgram\n9:30–10:00   Registration a
